Key creatives in the fashion world gathered to honour the industry's brightest stars this week at the annual British fashion Awards. And there was, of course, only one choice for model of the year – Agyness Deyn, who has been dubbed the new Kate Moss.

The leggy blonde, who used to work in a chip shop, made her entrance in a black Giles number with trailing hemline. Twenty-four-year-old Agyness, who is the face of Burberry, took to the stage to collect her award from designer Roland Mouret holding her mobile phone to her ear. "It's my mum on the phone," she told the crowd, which included Lily Allen and Kelly Osbourne.

"Yes, mum, it's like a fashion Oscar. Here, have a word with everyone," she said before holding the phone to the microphone so everyone could hear her mum's excited reaction. "She's well chuffed," confirmed Agyness before thanking a list of people, including Giles Deacon for her dress. "Even though everyone keeps stepping on it, it's still good."

Stella McCartney, soon to give birth to her third child, became only the fifth woman in more than 20 years to win the designer of the year accolade, and held back tears as she dedicated the award to her parents and her husband and children who, she said, "make my life worth living".

Oscar-winner Thandie Newton presented the gong to the heavily pregnant designer, who - referring to her soon-to-be brood of three - told the glittering crowd her team really deserved the gong. "I couldn't possibly manage with three children under the age of three without them."

A previous recipient of the award, Vivienne Westwood, was this year honoured for her outstanding achievement in fashion design. "Fashion is a life-enhancing activity and I hope you continue to love it," the famously eccentric icon of British fashion told her audience. "Everybody looks great tonight so I'm pleased about that."

The night's other winners included handbag guru Anya Hindmarch who took home the designer brand of the year trophy and Tom Binns, who triumphed in the accessory designer category.
